Many website programs, for example a shop or a forum, need a MySQL database. You create the database and a database user in cPanel, give the user access to the database, and enter both in your program.

Watch the video (1 min 59 s, with narration) – or follow the steps below.

Good to know: if you install WordPress or another app with Softaculous, the database is created for you – see Install WordPress with Softaculous. cPanel also notes that databases are limited to 5GB in size per our terms of service, and that larger databases may be excluded from the automatic backups.

Step by step

  1. Log in to cPanel (see Log in to cPanel from the client area). In the section Databases, click MySQL® Databases.

  2. Under Create New Database:

    1. New Database – type a short name, for example shop. cPanel puts your cPanel username and an underscore in front, so the full name becomes, for example, mallaweb_shop.
    2. Click Create Database.
The section Create New Database with the field New Database and the button Create Database
  3. Further down, under MySQL Users:

    1. Username – a name for the database user. It also gets your cPanel username in front.
    2. Password and Password (Again).
    3. Or click Password Generator for a strong password. Write the password down – your program needs it.
    4. Click Create User.
    5. Under Add User To Database, choose the new User,
    6. choose the new Database,
    7. and click Add.
The sections Add New User and Add User To Database with the fields filled in and the buttons Create User and Add
  4. The page Manage User Privileges opens:

    1. Tick ALL PRIVILEGES (unless your program's instructions say otherwise),
    2. then click Make Changes.
The page Manage User Privileges with ALL PRIVILEGES ticked and the button Make Changes
  5. Enter these details in your program's setup: the full database name, the full database username, the password and, as database server (host), localhost.

Open phpMyAdmin

  1. In cPanel, in the section Databases, click phpMyAdmin (or phpMyAdmin on your service page in the client area). It opens without another password. Your databases are listed on the left – click one to see its tables.

Careful: changes in phpMyAdmin take effect immediately and cannot be undone. Export a copy first (Export in the top menu) before you change or delete anything.
